place-name

What maps name

A place-name is the proper name of a geographic location—a city, river, mountain, country, or any identifiable spot on a map.

Place-names often preserve historical or linguistic traces: Many English place-names ending in -chester derive from the Latin word for camp.

The study of place-names is called toponymy.
