pings
Brief metallic tones
Pings are brief signals sent to check connection or get attention.
In computing, a ping tests whether a remote server is reachable: The server isn't responding to pings.
In messaging, pings are quick notifications or messages meant to prompt a response: I sent her a few pings but haven't heard back.
The word imitates the sharp, high-pitched sound such signals evoke.
