pinger
Underwater locator device
A pinger is a device that emits regular sound pulses, typically underwater for locating or tracking: sonar pingers on aircraft black boxes, pingers attached to fishing nets.
In computing, a pinger tests network connectivity by sending packets to see if a server responds.
Informally, someone who sends a quick message or reminder: I'll be the pinger for tomorrow's meeting.
