rumbles

Distant storm noises

Rumbles is the third-person singular of rumble and its plural noun.

A rumble is a deep, continuous sound like distant thunder or a hungry stomach: My stomach rumbles when I skip breakfast.

Engines rumble, storms rumble in the distance.

To rumble someone (British slang) is to discover their secret or expose their scheme: The police finally rumbled the gang.

A rumble can also be a street fight between rival groups, now somewhat dated: The gangs scheduled a rumble for midnight.
