hill start
Slope driving maneuver
A hill start is the technique of moving a vehicle forward from a stationary position on an upward slope, requiring coordination of clutch, accelerator, and brake (or handbrake) to prevent rolling backward.
The maneuver is particularly challenging with manual transmission: I stalled twice attempting a hill start on that steep driveway.
Hill start assist is now a common feature in modern vehicles, automatically holding the brakes momentarily when the driver releases the pedal on an incline.
