gear shift

Manual driver's lever

A gear shift is a lever or mechanism for changing gears in a vehicle, typically located on the floor console or steering column.

In manual transmissions, the driver moves the gear shift to select gears; in automatics, it selects drive, reverse, neutral, and park.

Also called a gearstick (British) or shifter.
