hogan

Earth-covered native shelter

A hogan is a traditional Navajo dwelling, typically a dome-shaped or polygonal structure built of logs and covered with earth.

The doorway traditionally faces east toward the rising sun.

Hogans remain important in Navajo culture for ceremonies and daily living: The medicine man conducted the healing ritual in the hogan. (Capitalized Hogan is a surname.)
