bailey

Fortified castle yard

A bailey is the outer wall of a castle, or the courtyard enclosed by that wall.

Medieval castles often had multiple baileys providing successive layers of defense.

The term appears most often in motte and bailey, describing an early castle design with a raised mound (motte) beside an enclosed yard (bailey). (Capitalized Bailey is a surname or given name.)
