pueblo

Southwestern communal dwelling

Pueblo comes from the Spanish word for "people" or "village." In the American Southwest, it refers to the adobe or stone communal dwellings built by Indigenous peoples, characterized by flat roofs and terraced levels: The ancient pueblo at Mesa Verde attracts thousands of visitors.

Pueblo also designates the Indigenous peoples who built and inhabit these structures, including the Hopi and Zuni.

In Spanish-speaking regions, pueblo simply means a town or village.
