basalt columns
Hexagonal lava formations
Basalt columns are vertical pillars of basite rock formed when lava cools and contracts, creating distinctive hexagonal shapes.
The columns occur naturally at volcanic sites worldwide, most famously at Giant's Causeway in Ireland and Devil's Tower in Wyoming.
The geometric regularity looks almost artificial, as if carved by hand: The basalt columns rose from the sea like an ancient cathedral.
