mesophyll
Photosynthetic leaf tissue
Mesophyll is the inner tissue of a leaf, sandwiched between the upper and lower surfaces.
This is where photosynthesis primarily occurs—the cells are packed with chloroplasts that capture light and convert carbon dioxide into sugars.
The mesophyll layer gives leaves their green color.
