oxygen debt
Post-exertion metabolic arrears
Oxygen debt is the temporary shortage of oxygen in muscles after intense physical exertion.
During strenuous activity, the body can't supply oxygen fast enough, so muscles rely on anaerobic processes that produce lactic acid.
The "debt" must be repaid afterward through heavy breathing: She bent over, hands on knees, paying off her oxygen debt after the sprint.
