oxidized copper
Green-coated penny metal
Oxidized copper is copper that has reacted with oxygen and other elements in the air, developing a characteristic patina.
Fresh copper is reddish-brown, but exposure turns it first dark brown, then eventually the blue-green of verdigris seen on old pennies, the Statue of Liberty, and weathered copper roofs.
The oxidation layer actually protects the metal beneath from further corrosion.
