Nonwhite describes or refers to people who are not white or of European descent.
The term groups together all racial and ethnic backgrounds except white: nonwhite voters, nonwhite neighborhoods.
It appears frequently in demographic discussions and policy contexts.
Some find the term problematic because it defines people by what they are not, centering whiteness as the default.
