navigation lights
Ship position indicators
Navigation lights are colored lights on aircraft and vessels indicating position and direction of travel.
Red lights mark the port (left) side, green the starboard (right), and white lights appear at the stern or masthead.
They allow other craft to determine heading and avoid collisions, especially at night: We spotted the ship's navigation lights through the fog.
