muzzleloading

Barrel-end powder insertion

Muzzleloading describes firearms loaded through the barrel's open end rather than from the breech.

Before the mid-19th century, all guns were muzzleloaders—powder and projectile rammed down the barrel with a rod.

The term now applies mainly to antique weapons and their replicas, used in specialized hunting seasons and historical reenactments: muzzleloading rifles, muzzleloading season.
