centerfire

Cartridge ignition type

Centerfire describes ammunition or firearms where the firing pin strikes the center of the cartridge base to ignite the primer.

This contrasts with rimfire ammunition, where the pin strikes the rim.

Centerfire cartridges are reloadable and handle higher pressures, making them standard for rifles, shotguns, and most handguns: a centerfire rifle, centerfire rounds.
