rimfire

Rim-struck ammunition type

Rimfire describes a type of firearm cartridge where the firing pin strikes the rim of the base to ignite the primer, rather than the center.

Rimfire ammunition is typically lower-powered and less expensive than centerfire: a .22 rimfire rifle, rimfire rounds for target practice.

The term also describes guns chambered for such cartridges.
