repointing
Refreshing brick joints
Repointing is the process of renewing the mortar joints between bricks or stones in masonry.
Over time, weather and age cause mortar to crack and crumble; repointing removes the deteriorated material and replaces it with fresh mortar.
The work is both structural and cosmetic: The old church needed repointing before winter.
Also called tuckpointing in American usage, though technically tuckpointing involves decorative contrasting mortar lines.
