cinder block

Concrete building unit

A cinder block is a hollow rectangular building block made from concrete and coal cinders or ash.

Standard blocks measure roughly 8 by 8 by 16 inches with two or three hollow cores.

Cinder blocks are cheaper and lighter than solid concrete blocks, used for foundations, retaining walls, and utilitarian construction: The garage was just bare cinder block walls.
