jet stream

Atmospheric river aloft

A jet stream is a narrow band of strong, high-altitude winds that flow from west to east in the upper atmosphere, typically at speeds between 80 and 140 miles per hour.

These rivers of fast-moving air occur at the boundaries between warm and cold air masses and significantly influence weather patterns, storm tracks, and aircraft flight times.

Pilots flying with the jet stream can reduce travel time, while those flying against it face longer journeys.
