minelayers
Naval mine deployers
Minelayers are naval vessels designed to deploy explosive mines in bodies of water.
These ships strategically place mines to create defensive barriers or offensive hazards for enemy vessels: The minelayers worked through the night to secure the harbor entrance.
The term also applies to aircraft or submarines performing the same function.
