microfractures
Minuscule structural fissures
Microfractures are tiny cracks in a material—bone, rock, metal, or composite structures—too small to see without magnification.
In medicine, microfractures in bone result from repetitive stress and can lead to stress fractures if not allowed to heal: The runner's shin showed microfractures from overtraining.
In orthopedic surgery, microfracture is also a technique where small holes are drilled into damaged cartilage to stimulate healing.
