callus

Skin's defensive thickening

A callus is a thick, hardened patch of skin that develops from repeated friction or pressure—on hands from gripping tools, on feet from ill-fitting shoes.

The toughened tissue protects the underlying skin.

As a verb, to callus is to form such hardened skin: His palms had callused from years of manual labor.

In medicine, callus also refers to new bone tissue that forms around a fracture during healing.
