major planets

Mercury through Neptune

Major planets are the eight largest bodies orbiting the Sun: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.

The term distinguishes these from dwarf planets like Pluto, which was reclassified in 2006.

Before that reclassification, major planets was rarely used since planet alone sufficed.
