dwarf planets

Pluto, Eris, Ceres

Dwarf planets are celestial bodies that orbit the sun and have enough mass for gravity to shape them into roughly spherical forms, but haven't cleared their orbital neighborhood of other debris.

The category was created in 2006 when Pluto was reclassified, joining Ceres, Eris, Makemake, and Haumea.

Pluto's demotion to dwarf planet status remains controversial among some astronomers and the general public.
