majorities

More than half

Majorities is the plural of majority, which names the greater part of a group or the larger number when a whole is divided.

In voting contexts, a majority means more than half the votes cast, as distinguished from a plurality, which is simply the largest share.

Political parties or coalitions that control more than half the seats in a legislature are called majorities: Democrats held slim majorities in both chambers.

The term also refers to the age at which a person gains full legal rights: She reached her majority at eighteen.
