leagues

Units of distance

Leagues is the plural of league, a word with two distinct origins.

One league is a unit of distance, roughly three miles, now archaic except in literary contexts: Twenty thousand leagues under the sea.

The other league is an alliance or association—sports teams form leagues, nations join leagues, people in league with each other are collaborating, often secretly.

To be out of someone's league is to be beyond their reach, whether in dating, competition, or ability: She's way out of my league.
