disassociation

Severing of connection

Disassociation is the act of separating or disconnecting from something—a group, an idea, or a former association: The company sought disassociation from its controversial founder.

In psychology, dissociation (the more common spelling for the clinical term) describes a mental disconnection from thoughts, feelings, or identity, often as a response to trauma.

The dis- spelling emphasizes active separation rather than a psychological state.
