Highest professional level
Major league refers to the highest level of professional competition, originally and still primarily in American baseball, where Major League Baseball comprises the top tier of teams.
The term extends to other professional sports and figuratively to anything operating at the highest level of skill, importance, or seriousness: This is major league corruption.
As an adverb, it intensifies: He screwed up major league.
The opposite is minor league.
