kokanee

Freshwater red fish

Kokanee is a landlocked form of sockeye salmon found in freshwater lakes of western North America.

Unlike their ocean-going relatives, kokanee complete their entire life cycle in freshwater, typically growing smaller—rarely exceeding two pounds.

They're prized by anglers and turn bright red during spawning season: The lake is stocked with kokanee.
