parr
Young Atlantic salmon
A parr is a young salmon or trout at a stage between the fry and smolt phases, typically one to two years old and still living in freshwater.
Parr are distinguished by dark vertical bars along their sides called parr marks, which provide camouflage in streams and rivers.
The term is used primarily in fisheries and aquatic biology.
The river was full of parr feeding in the shallows.
