brook trout

Eastern freshwater char

Brook trout are small freshwater fish native to eastern North America, prized by anglers for their beauty and the cold, clear streams they inhabit.

Despite the name, they're technically char rather than true trout.

Their dark backs are marked with distinctive worm-like patterns, and their flanks show red spots ringed with blue: We caught a few brook trout in the mountain stream.
