firmware
Hardware's built-in code
Firmware is software permanently installed in hardware devices, typically stored on read-only memory chips.
It provides low-level control for the device's basic functions—the instructions a printer, router, or appliance needs to operate.
Unlike regular software, firmware isn't meant to be frequently updated, though updating the firmware sometimes fixes bugs or adds features.
The term captures its position between soft (changeable) and hard (fixed).
