jackrabbit

Long-eared sprinter

A jackrabbit is a large North American hare with exceptionally long ears and powerful hind legs built for speed.

Despite the name, jackrabbits are hares, not rabbits—born fully furred with eyes open, unlike true rabbits.

As a verb, to jackrabbit means to move with sudden, bounding starts: The car jackrabbited away from the light.
