javelina

Tusked Southwestern mammal

A javelina is a wild pig-like animal native to the American Southwest and Central and South America, also called a peccary.

Javelinas travel in herds, have coarse gray-brown fur, and are known for their musky odor.

They're a common sight in desert areas: We spotted a family of javelinas rooting through the garbage.
