prairie dog
Grassland tunnel dweller
Prairie dogs are burrowing rodents native to North American grasslands, living in large underground colonies called towns.
Despite the name, they're not dogs—the word comes from their sharp, bark-like warning calls.
We spotted prairie dogs popping up from their burrows across the field.
