leveret
Infant long-eared lagomorph
A leveret is a young hare, typically in its first year.
Unlike rabbits, hares don't burrow, so leverets are born fully furred with open eyes in shallow depressions called forms.
The word appears mainly in nature writing and hunting contexts: We startled a leveret in the tall grass.
