involution
Complexity folding inward
Involution is the process of turning inward or becoming complicated.
In biology, it describes the shrinking of an organ, especially the uterus returning to normal size after childbirth.
In mathematics, it's a function that is its own inverse—apply it twice and you're back where you started.
More abstractly, involution suggests folding in on itself: The plot's involutions made it hard to follow.
The adjective is involuted.
