hyperbola

Open curved shape

A hyperbola is a geometric curve formed when a plane intersects both halves of a double cone.

It consists of two symmetric branches that curve away from each other, never meeting.

In mathematics, a hyperbola is defined as all points where the difference of distances to two fixed points (foci) remains constant.

The shape appears in satellite dish design, navigation systems, and the paths of some comets.

Not to be confused with hyperbole, exaggerated speech.
