Fried Southern side
Hushpuppies are small, deep-fried balls of cornmeal batter, a staple of Southern American cooking typically served alongside fried fish or barbecue.
The name supposedly comes from cooks tossing scraps to quiet barking dogs: Hush, puppies.
The catfish platter came with coleslaw and hushpuppies. (Capitalized Hush Puppies is a shoe brand.)
