black-eyed peas

Cream-colored legumes with dark spots

Black-eyed peas are legumes with a distinctive dark spot on their pale skin, resembling an eye.

A staple of Southern American cooking, they're traditionally eaten on New Year's Day for good luck: We always have black-eyed peas and collard greens on January first.

Also called cowpeas. (Capitalized Black Eyed Peas is an American musical group.)
