Deep-fried cornbread ball
A hushpuppy is a small, deep-fried ball of cornmeal batter, a staple of Southern American cooking often served alongside fried fish or barbecue.
The name supposedly comes from tossing scraps to quiet barking dogs: Hush, puppy.
Also spelled hush puppy. (Capitalized Hush Puppies is a shoe brand.)
