aerostat

Gas-filled flyer

An aerostat is any aircraft that achieves lift through buoyancy rather than aerodynamic forces—balloons and airships rather than airplanes and helicopters.

The term is technical, appearing mainly in aviation and military contexts: The military deployed aerostats for surveillance along the border.

Weather balloons and blimps are aerostats; anything with wings or rotors is not.
