helium gas

Lighter than air

Helium gas is the gaseous form of the element helium—colorless, odorless, and lighter than air.

The term is slightly redundant since helium exists as a gas under normal conditions, but it appears in technical contexts distinguishing the gas from liquid helium used in cryogenics: The balloon was filled with helium gas.

Inhaling helium gas temporarily raises voice pitch, a common party trick.
