backcourt

Guards' home territory

In basketball, the backcourt is the half of the court containing a team's own basket—the area they defend and must advance the ball out of within ten seconds.

By extension, backcourt refers collectively to a team's guards (point guard and shooting guard): The Lakers have one of the best backcourts in the league.

In tennis, the backcourt is the area near the baseline, behind the service boxes.
