ground wire

Fault current path

A ground wire is an electrical conductor that provides a safe path for excess current to flow into the earth, preventing shock or fire.

In household wiring, it's typically the bare copper or green-insulated wire that connects to outlets and appliances: Make sure the ground wire is securely attached to the metal box.

Also called an earth wire in British English.
