crystal radio

Unpowered AM detector

A crystal radio is a simple radio receiver that uses a crystalline mineral as a detector to convert radio waves into audio signals.

It requires no batteries or external power, running entirely on energy from the radio waves themselves.

Crystal radios were popular in the early twentieth century and remain a common electronics project for beginners: My grandfather built a crystal radio as a boy.
