short circuit

Wiring fault condition

A short circuit is an electrical connection that bypasses the intended path, allowing current to flow where it shouldn't—typically causing damage, blown fuses, or fire.

The verb short-circuit means to cause this, or figuratively to bypass or circumvent: She short-circuited the approval process by going straight to the CEO.

Often shortened to short: The wiring shorted out.
