river gorges
Deep water chasms
River gorges are deep, narrow valleys carved by rivers through rock over geological time.
The walls are typically steep or cliff-like, formed as flowing water erodes softer stone or cuts through uplifted terrain.
Famous examples include the Grand Canyon and the gorges of the Yangtze River.
We hiked along the rim of the river gorge.
